Nadiad's History & Identity

Nadiad's story begins as a prosperous trading settlement in the fertile Charotar plains of Gujarat โ€” a region blessed with rich black cotton soil and a network of trade routes connecting Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and coastal ports.

Over centuries, the city grew into a notable centre of education and scholarship, earning the proud epithet "Sakshar Bhumi" โ€” Land of Literates. It produced numerous writers, reformers, lawyers, and thinkers who shaped modern Gujarati society.

The walled old city, with its surviving gates (darwajas) and havelis, offers a tangible connection to this past. The warm community bonds, the reverence for education, and the deep spiritual identity โ€” all inherited from generations who valued both learning and devotion.

๐Ÿ“š Did You Know?

Nadiad has historically produced a significant number of lawyers and writers relative to its size โ€” a fact noted in Gujarati literary circles. The city's schools and colleges have been active since the late 19th century.

Uttarayan โ€” Gujarat's Kite Festival

Every year on 14 January (Makar Sankranti), Gujarat celebrates Uttarayan โ€” the festival of kites. The sky above Nadiad, as across Gujarat, fills with hundreds of colourful kites as families, friends, and neighbours gather on rooftops from dawn.

The competitive spirit is playful but passionate: kite flyers try to cut each other's strings in aerial duels while watching out for their own lines. The call of "Kaipo Che!" (I've cut it!) rings out across rooftops all day. Sesame sweets (til-gol), peanuts, and cold drinks are shared as the celebration continues until dark.

  • Celebrated on 14 January (Makar Sankranti) every year
  • Morning through evening โ€” all-day rooftop celebrations
  • Traditional sesame sweets (til-gol) shared with neighbours
  • Vibrant kite markets active from December onwards
  • Safe, family-friendly festival with community spirit

Nadiad's Literary & Educational Legacy

Beyond temples and gates, Nadiad's greatest heritage is its tradition of thought and scholarship.

The title "Sakshar Bhumi" is not merely a flattering tag โ€” it reflects a genuine historical reality. Nadiad produced a disproportionately high number of educated professionals, writers, lawyers, and reform-minded thinkers during the 19th and 20th centuries.

This intellectual tradition is partly rooted in the city's prosperous mercantile community, which valued education as a path to both personal advancement and social service. The Santram Mandir's philanthropic activities โ€” including educational institutions โ€” have reinforced this cultural value for generations.

Today, Nadiad is home to several colleges, technical institutes, and schools. The city's educational institutions attract students from across Gujarat and neighbouring states, sustaining the "Sakshar Bhumi" tradition into the modern era.
